Dar Tassa is a mountain retreat hotel in the High Atlas mountains, forty miles south of Marrakech and just four miles from the village of Marigha. Not only then does this hotel offer a remarkable peace and solace a mere hour and a half journey from the hub of activity in Marrakech, but it is also one of the eco-friendly hotels that have thankfully sprung up.
The owners are promoting a sustainable kind of tourism here, assisting in the conservation of the Toubkal National Park. Bearing testament to its eco credentials, Dar Tassa was selected both as one of the 10 best ecological and economical places in the world by Ryanair Magazine, and shortlisted for the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards 2009. This philosophy also involves employing local people in the running and maintenance of the dar, and investing some of the money earned back into the local community.
Due emphasis is also placed on the famous Berber hospitality in this family-run little hotel, which gives guests the opportunity to engage themselves in various kinds of excursions, such as walking, trekking, mule and donkey rides, and cycling. Dar Tassa's name literally means 'home of motherly love' in the Berber language.
This gloriously remote location is not far from the Takkerkhort Reserve (a 20-minute walk), home to the Barbary sheep. These are native to Morocco, an endangered species, and protected by the Water and Forests Department. Guests can arrange to have an expert guide take them out into the reserve and show them these iconic animals. Elsewhere, the curves of the Tizi-n-Test road are within easy reach - Morocco 's highest pass, at just over 2000m.
Dar Tassa is a welcoming vantage point for what is around in the High Atlas, but also a hotel to be enjoyed for its own nature.

"Friendly smiles welcomed us with milk and dates (Moroccan tradition). The guesthouse was amazing and colourful with a light and airy feel to it. As we chatted with our host Amina over a cup of mint tea, we were still mesmerised by the views. Our room was clean, comfy and simply, but nicely decorated. The complimentary bottle of water was very much appreciated."
"Feel the real rural Morocco".
"Food was always freshly prepared, fresh bread and pancakes for breakfast, home cooked soups, and tagines of vegetables, couscous and meat for dinner. Mint tea, water and coffee always on hand."
"Wonderful little mountain retreat with a big heart."
"We went on two one-day walks with Abdul, a very informative guide, and some very patient mules. The scenery was spectacular in the mountains and we didn't meet a soul."
