Chateau in the Bordeaux Wine Region

Bordeaux, Medoc, Saint Emilion, Margaux are all words that can only mean one thing: fine French wine. We have just added Le Clos de Meyre, the hotel belonging to Chateau Meyre. it's a great base for sampling the products of Bordeaux, but a great place for seeing so much more of the area too.

It's a big day for us here at Little Hotels: we are launching our brand new website Little Hotels of France! Ever since we created Little Hotels six years ago, Spain has been our focus, but even we have to admit that there are other interesting places to go for a holiday. We dipped our toes in the water with Little Hotels of Morocco, but now we are going mainstream with the most popular tourist destination in the world, France. Of course it takes time to find the places that we are pleased to call Little Hotels of France, so we are starting with just ten hotels that have really attracted our attention and we will quickly be moving forward from there.

Luxury Villa near Marrakech

We have lots of riad hotels in the medina of Marrakech, but that may not be everyone's cup of (mint) tea. So for those who want to visit Marrakech without actually staying in the city, we now have a beautiful luxury villa just twenty minutes from the centre. Domaine de l'Akhdar has just about everything for a truly relaxing holiday: 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in a traditional-styled sandstone villa, swimming pool, hammam, tennis court, garden. The list goes on and on. You can even have your own personal chef.

Casa de Carmona

On the face of it, Casa de Carmona just outside Seville doesn't qualify as a "Little Hotel". Thirty three rooms is some way beyond our norm. However our one rigid rule at Little Hotels is that we don't have rigid rules. Without a doubt, Casa de Carmona qualifies on the basis of being a hotel that we would like to stay in, and that is far more important than any bald statement of room numbers. The decor is outstanding, the owner enthusiastic and the staff have that clever way of being unobtrusive and attentive at the same time. We really couldn't ask for much more.

Eco Holidays on Lanzarote

We were so impressed when we discovered Finca de Arrieta: beautiful, charming and chic accommodation in a gorgeous location, and run on green principles. There are five choices of accommodation including a luxury villa for a family and a garden cottage for a couple or a small family. For something really different, why not stay in a Mongolian Yurt? I doubt there are many yurts in Mongolia as luxurious as these!

Music Recitals in Barcelona

Every Friday and Saturday through the autumn and winter, La Duquesa de Cardona is putting on a special piano recital, plus showing a classic black-and-white film. On some Saturdays they also have a Musical Dinner with soprano, baritone and piano.

La Moraleja, Mallorca

There are a couple of nice offers from La Moraleja, the luxury hotel in Cala San Vicente. First, there is an upgrade from a double room to a Demi Suite, available for stays in May and October, provided there are still Demi Suites available of course. Or plan ahead and get a 10% discount for early booking, up until 30 April.

VAT

It's not absolutely certain, but we think that VAT in Spain will increase from 7% to 8% in July 2010. Some hotels will apply the increase and some will absorb it, but at worst it will add less than 1% to the cost of a stay. And 8% VAT still looks like a bargain compared to the VAT charged in other countries.

Get To Know Granada

This winter La Almunia del Valle offers 3 and 5 night packages to help visitors get to know the city and it's surroundings. A tapas tour, a little bit of walking in the mountains, dinner, drinks, etc. Available from 8 December to 28 February.

Riad in Marrakech

There are over 600 riads in the centre of Marrakech. How many of those would be good enough to be included in Little Hotels of Morocco? 10%? That would be 60 riads, which would be far too many for us to cope with. We have just added our tenth though, because Mark just couldn't resist. This latest one is Dar Rocmarra, another classic riad which makes a special point of providing really excellent home-cooked food.

Almond Blossom Time in Mallorca

Son Amoixa Vell are offering a discount of 25% during the almond blossom season (9 January to 27 March). Turn you back on the cold and frost and enjoy the early spring of a Mediterranean island. There is even an extra offer for visitors staying 5 nights or more.

We encourage all our visitors to send in reviews of the hotels we list, and it's very gratifying to find that nearly all of them are so positive (though we show all the negative ones too: no-one's perfect, even if that's what we aspire to). Some are short and to-the-point while others are so well written that we're left thinking, "I wish I'd written that." This review of some hotels in Mallorca definitely falls in the latter category.

Essaouira, Morocco

A new area of Morocco has opened up on Little Hotels of Morocco: Essaouira. This charming little town on the Atlantic coast offers a medina and souks (just toned down a little compared with Marrakech and Fez), impressive ramparts, wonderful weather and beautiful sandy beaches. The first "Little Hotel" in Essaouira is Madada Mogador, right in the corner of the old town, against the ramparts, looking straight onto the beach.

Hotel Cardamomo, Guadalajara

Our newest hotel is set amongst the rolling hills of Guadalajara, right in the centre of Spain. Hotel Cardamomo is a good place for a holiday to visit the parts of Spain that other tourists never reach, or just a stopping-off point on the long drive south.
