Little Hotels

Have you been on holiday yet? Maybe not, but I do hope you've got it booked by now. If not though, don't despair! Some places are fully booked, especially for August, but we can always find you somewhere nice.

The Dreaded EU Referendum

EU flagYou're probably heartily fed up with this subject by now, so I'll try not to repeat any of the rubbish that has been pouring out from our televisions and newspapers recently. Instead, I'll try to briefly consider the impact that "remain" or "leave" might have on your future holidays.

In a word, the answer is NONE. I've already written a short blog in response to the spouting of some "travel industry leaders". Now please bear with me while I consider a couple of the important points of the campaign as they relate to holidays.

First is the question of the exchange rate. A few months ago the pound dropped from about €1.38/€1.40 and is now floating about €1.27 to €1.32. Remain campaigners say that is because the markets are devaluing the pound in response to the likelihood of a "leave" decision. That's a drop of about 7%, but the historic exchange rate over the last 10 years has ranged from €1.05 to €1.50 so it's really something of a drop in the ocean. Bear in mind that like-for-like hotel and restaurant rates in Spain are 40% cheaper than the UK, in France they vary from equal to 40% cheaper and in Morocco they are less than half the equivalent in the UK. Whatever happens to the exchange rate, a sunny vacation will still be much cheaper than a staycation.

So what about the impact on borders and passports? (Some people have even mentioned visas!) Nothing will change. The issue of borders is not one for the EU, but is influenced by the Schengen Agreement. It's because Britain and Ireland are not a part of the Schengen zone that we need passports to travel to other EU countries (which are in Schengen). The same will still be true if we leave the EU. It's just like holidaying in Morocco (non-EU of course). Show your passport, walk on, enjoy your holiday. Indeed that's just the way it was when we were in the then EEC and Spain wasn't, or earlier when we weren't in the Common Market but France was.

The referendum is an important decision for our country, but it's not about our holidays.

Special Offers

Villa L'Escaleta has a 12 day window left in August (8th to 12th) for a five bedroom village house in Andratx, Mallorca. Just € 350 per night for up to 10 people (12, if you use the sofa-bed). The minimum bookings is 7 nights.

Villa L'EscaletaHotel El Lago, set among the lakes and mountains of Andalucia, offers long-stay discounts, and the "long-stay" can actually be quite short. 10% saving on just 3 nights or a 15% saving on 7 nights.

There are all sorts of packages available at the Hotel Bremon in Catalonia. Choose from Romantic Breaks, a Cultural Visit, Vineyard Tours or special prices for Over-55s. This must be one of the few places where one of the attractions is to go down a salt mine!

Going "all-inclusive" doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to a mass-market holiday-machine. The Olive Mill is a grown-ups-only micro-hotel which offers an all-inclusive option, plus the assurance of a truly individual service.

If you're planning a visit to the Dordogne you could get free nights on longer stays at L'Auberge de l'Etang Bleu.

Many of our riad hotels in Marrakech have offers or one sort or another. Pick out the Early Booking discounts, 7x6 offers, Special Packages or at Riyad Al Moussika there is even a huge 33% discount this summer.

There's lots more too, and offers change frequently. Watch out for the red Special Offer! labels on our pages.

Our Wine Competition

Our wine competition in the spring gathered lots of entries. Commiserations to those of you who didn't win, but congratulations to Anna on winning a case of Spanish wine. We were so pleased with the quantity of entries we received that in the end we got a bit carried away and threw in a couple of runner-up prizes too.

Something Out of the Ordinary

Hotel ViuraIf I told you that Hotel Viura looks like a pile of lop-sided boxes thrown on top of each other, you may be a little doubtful. If I told you that it's a modern, contemporary design sitting in a quiet village next door to a traditional church, you may think it might spoil the place. In reality nothing could be further from the truth and Hotel Viura is (in my humble opinion) an architectural tour-de-force. Not only for its exterior but for the inside too, where modern design meets natural materials in delightful harmony.

The hotel is situated right in the centre of the La Rioja region so it naturally makes a big fuss about good food and wine. The rooms are large and perfectly designed, and there are all the facilities you could ask for; like a bike room with complimentary bike hire, a massage room, a gym, and of course wine-tastings.

In fact this clever fusion of traditional old and cutting-edge new seems to be something that the Spanish do especially well. Amongst many, here are a few of the best examples:
Hotel Calle Mayor in La Rioja
Cuatre Finques on the Costa Blanca
Petit Hotel Son Arnau in Mallorca
Son Bernadinet, also in Mallorca
Torre del Canonigo in Ibiza Town
Driftwood, on Lanzarote

Happy holidays!
