Granada

Granada: the place that gives us the Alhambra, that masterpiece of Moorish architecture that still dominates the city. No matter how many superlatives we use, the Alhambra leaves its visitors awestruck.

Granada the province is also home to the Sierra Nevada, the most southerly ski resort in Europe. It really is possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe on the beach in the afternoon.

Small hotel in the Sierra Nevada

Hotel La Almunia del Valle is a country boutique hotel situated in a beautiful spot in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, just a few kilometres outside Granada. Built as a mountain “cortijo”, the hotel is totally at one with its surroundings and all the rooms enjoy impressive sights of the Sierra Nevada.

The guest rooms project a warmth and comfort, accentuated by their soft earthy colours. Each is provided with internet connection, telephone and a mini-bar, and the Superior rooms have a private terrace. Attention to detail has been the hallmark of the design, complemented by an interesting collection of original art work displayed around the hotel. For relaxing, there is a large terrace and a swimming pool in the garden, and a lounge and bar indoors with a fireplace for when the mountain evenings become a little chilly.

The hotel is surrounded by an estate of 13,000 square metres divided in two areas. One part is cultivated with olive, chestnut and various other fruit trees, and the second left in its natural state with oaks, "esparteras" and aromatic mountain herbs. Although the city is not far away (ideal for visiting the Alhambra and the other sights of Granada) the mountain blocks out the light pollution so there is a real pleasure in being able to meditate on the terrace while gazing up at the star-filled sky of spring and summer.

This is a location that has so much to offer, right in the Natural Park, the ski resorts of Sierra Nevada are just a 20 minute drive away. Granada is less than that, it’s only 40 minutes down to the coast or about the same if you want to sample the unique countryside of the Alpujarras.

This place is not easy to find, even by satnav but it is worth persevering. A delightful former farm with stunning views across to the Sierra Nevada and very convenient for visiting Granada by car. (Within a few minutes drive we could literally see the Alhambra in the distance). The swimming pool was very useful for cooling off after a hot Spanish day. There is a very personal service from the owners who are obviously proud of their property. Food was excellent - both the breakfast and dinner.

We spent two nights at this hotel in March and would not hesitate to return; in fact, next time, we would like to stay a week. The hotel and room were very comfortable, the food was delicious and the staff members excellent; more like staying at a friend's house than a hotel. And what a peaceful location! Our stay was a blessing.

Our stay in Monachil near Granada was wonderful. Patricia and Manuel are great hosts. The hotel is comfortable and beautifully decorated - excellent food - and a beautiful view.

We stayed 3 wonderful nights at La Almunia whilst on our honeymoon and stayed in room 7 (superior double). From the moment we arrived, our lovely hosts made us feel very welcome - nothing would appear to be too much trouble. The views from every part of this small hotel are quite simply stunning and it would have been very easy not to have ventured far. However, with Granada an easy 15 minute drive away La Alhambra is a must, and truly worthy of a whole days visit. The drive from the village of Monachil to the hotel is not for the faint hearted but well worth the effort - be sure to follow the hotel's directions as we did and you won't go wrong. Our room had every home comfort from forgotten toothbrushes to cosy bathrobes and slippers. As someone who is very fussy about bed comfort; I slept blissfully and without complaint; which is rare. We dined here 2 evenings and thoroughly enjoyed every course of each 4 course set menu especially the Iberian pork fillet, in addition the little bar was able to provide us with any beverage that we cared to ask for. This is a chic, luxurious and stylish hotel set in the most idyllic setting, owned and run by Manuel and Patricia the nicest kindest and most attentive hosts you could ask for. We look forward to our return and will rely on our very happy memories to sustain us till then.

Furthermore; we were very impressed with the service received from your company and will look to use you again - thank you.

We have just come back from three great days staying at La Almunia del Valle, Monachil.

We had a great time, the food was excellent, hospitality superb and surroundings outstanding, with great walks.

Be warned sat navs do not function very well in the Sierra Nevada and we did get very lost. Had we used the supplied directions then we would have located the hotel much quicker.

All in all a smashing place to stay not too far from Granada and its outstanding attractions.

We have just spent 5 nights in Monachil Granada at the La Almunia del Valle Hotel. May we say what a good experience that was, and may we thank you all at Little Hotels of Spain for guiding us at ease through your site.
(Apart from the storm on Friday 21/09 on our way to Granada!)

Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Hotel's Guestbook:

"Favourite inn by far. Patricia and her husband Jose Manuel were so gracious and the pride they take in their inn was so evident. Their attention to little details that make a difference was outstanding. Beautifully decorated and the terrace and pool area so relaxing. The dinner was one of the best meals we had in Spain. I wish we had stayed longer. When we return to Spain, I will plan on it." L.S.

"Food was good but a little pricey. The hospitality was excellent, one immediately feels at home. The whole property is very tastefully decorated, so many lovely details. It was very hard to leave and we hope to soon be back."

"We would recommend you to anybody as we found your service excellent. La Almunia del Valle near Granada was fantastic with beautiful rooms, fantastic meals, wonderful position and the owners were very helpful and welcoming. We will certainly use your services again." S & S

A Word From The Owner

"La Almunia is a special place where we offer our guests not just our personal attention, but also a remarkable position surrounded by high peaks and bordered by the Monachil river where the light and the silence will take over your senses."

We Say

It would be very easy to spend a holiday here, and never go further than the nearby countryside and mountains. A different walk, bike ride or activity every day. However, it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to go into Granada (just a short taxi journey, and then no problems with a car in the city) to visit the Alhambra, the Generalife, the Albaicín and all the other amazing sights of the last capital of Al Andalus.
