Gibbs Glade Cottage & Garden Studios
, Gibbes, St Peter.
Just yards from the long sandy beach that fringes the west coast of Barbados, we find Gibbs Glade Cottage & Garden Studios. Host Karen and Toby have a small group of bungalows sitting in a lush garden clustered around the swimming pool.
The accommodation is very much in the Barbados style, reminiscent of the typical chattel houses. The largest is the Cottage, which sleeps three people in one double and one single bedroom, both with air conditioning. The open plan layout is ideal for a holiday. The finishes throughout include pickled pine, coral rendering and tile floors which give a real beach house feel and epitomise indoor-outdoor Caribbean living. A breakfast bar opens into the simply equipped kitchen including a washing machine. The reception room and the kitchen both lead through French windows onto a large veranda that runs the length of the cottage, offering plenty of room for sitting and dining, and looking towards the swimming pool.
As the name implies, the Pool Studio has two sets of French doors leading straight onto the pool terrace and a verandah at the side for a little more privacy. The studio is spacious with two double beds, a big living area and a kitchenette.
The Palm Studio is of similar size but is set a little apart so is popular with honeymooners and other lovers.
Finally the Cabin is ideal for a single traveller or a couple who want to cosy up. It has a verandah and all the other essentials like air-conditioning, wifi, a fridge, tea/coffee making and a walk-in shower in the bathroom.
Nothing is very far on Barbados if you have a car, but there is plenty within walking distance of Gibbs Glade too. Gibbs Beach is a beautiful, peaceful stretch of sand lined with private villas, while Mullins Beach is more lively with a bar, restaurant and water sports facilities. A slightly longer walk will bring you to the marina and yacht club at Heywoods Beach or go slightly inland for the bars and restaurants of Speightstown.
