Le Jas du Boeuf is a 200 year-old farmhouse lying on the southern slopes of the Montagne du Lure under the clear blue skies of Haute Provence offering a magical location in which to indulge oneself in a little rural calm. All around there are hundreds of acres of forests and fields scented with wild herbs and lavender. You can neither hear nor see the roads and village from the hotel. There are no neighbours within view or hearing distance and all four rooms have their own private entrances directly from the gardens.

As might be expected of owners with an eye for design, the décor of the hotel is stylish, expertly blending respect for tradition with clean contemporary furnishings. The 9m x 7m infinity pool overlooks the spectacular scenery, salt and chlorine-free thanks to the latest UV technology. The pool serves as a focal point in what is a peaceful haven of a little hotel two miles from the village of Cruis.

The space that surrounds the hotel is certainly not little, but Le Jas du Boeuf is: two double rooms are found in the farmhouse, each with their own entrance to the building and one with a private terrace, as well as what is perhaps the highlight, two double bungalows, constructed from wood in a very contemporary style by the infinity pool.

All rooms have a hair-dryer and bath and pool towels, as well as tea and coffee-making facilities. There is also an outdoor summer kitchen for the preparation of light meals. Breakfast is a treat, including freshly-baked cakes and breads, fresh fruit and juices, homemade jams, yogurt with homemade granola, coffee and tea.

Double Room

Chênes is Dana's favourite bungalow due to its large round window and great views overlooking the infinity pool. It has a double bed and can accommodate an extra single bed.

The Roseaux bungalow has a double bed with great views overlooking the infinity pool and a large bathroom but no space to add an extra bed.

Romarins is the largest room, with its own private terrace overlooking the gardens and a Queen bed. It has lots of space to add an extra bed, a large bathroom, and nice stone walls.

Small Double Room

Olivier has a double bed and its own entrance directly from the gardens but it is the smallest room so perfect for singles.

Breakfast is French style and includes a rotating menu of croissants and breads as well as home-made cakes and muffins accompanied by fresh fruit, juices, excellent coffees and teas, local yogurt or fromage blanc, honey, and jams. There is always a fresh batch of granola on hand made with organic oats and local honey.

On most days you can eat in the courtyard under the mulberry or almond trees. Otherwise, meals are taken in the farmhouse. With a background in quality organic catering, Dana and Jerome are pretty fussy about the food they prepare and serve. The first priority is taste, which usually means fresh, local ingredients. Organic is best, of course, though not always available, but Dana looks beyond the label to ensure quality.

There is also a fully equipped summer kitchen at the disposal of guests that has a great view.

On occasions Dana and Jerome offer a Table d'Hôtes en famille but they do need at least 24 hours notice.

There are two restaurants just down the road that are recommended. Bookings can be made from the hotel.

We have just had a lovely three day break at this charming and delightful venue. Great breakfasts. Lovely scenery. So many butterflies! Excellent hosts. Peaceful and good company with the other guests.
Two sweet rough haired dachshunds.
The views from the pool are beautiful and the starry night sky awesome.
On our last night we had an excellent Table D 'Hote menu en famille out on the terrace in front of the house. In all a lovely experience.
At least three good restaurants in near by villages. Roads were excellent and the Jas easy to find. Even though their own drive was quite steep and challenging but we managed.
Any negatives? We found the infinity pool rather chilly but the younger folk were quite happy. The pool was getting warmer every day as the season moved on.
Also the smallest room 'Oliver ' which we had is tiny. We were a very late booking so we were not complaining. The others have their own patio areas but Oliver has its own access to the out doors too.
We stayed in this hotel last August, for a short break.

It was lovely, very welcoming and helpful hosts, enjoyed breakfast on the terrace, a wonderful infinity pool, delicious food and very peaceful.

We booked last minute so had the last available room which was quite dark with one small low window. The other rooms looked so much better.

We may not have as many reviews as some, but we do know their provenance. They have all been written by people who have visited this hotel after booking through Little Hotels. We publish all reviews, unedited, except for the occasional spelling correction.

“Your divine French home is a little paradise. We enjoyed to be your guest and had a wonderful time.”

"Just a few kilometres outside of Cruis, there is a marvellous chambre d'hôte called Le Jas du Boeuf run by Les & Wendy. The location is superb, the infinity swimming pool has an excellent view, clean rooms and their hospitality is above and beyond helpful and excellent."

We Say

Le Jas du Boeuf is one of those excellent instances of someone turning passion
and expertise into their life's work, and it shows! In particular we like the way in which contemporary design has been applied to a traditional building.

A Word From the Owner

Le Jas du Boeuf offers a peaceful retreat with great views yet all the traditional Provencal hallmarks are in close proximity: olive groves, lavender fields, sunflowers, vineyards, ancient villages, pine and herbs fragrant in the heat. The vibrant colours of the landscape and the variety of light will appeal to anyone who simply wants to relax in a beautiful setting.
