When you look up at that perfectly regular facade with the tall windows and mansard roof, you know you have found a classic small French chateau. Not long ago, owner Francis found it too, and carried out a thorough renovation to create his extremely comfortable little hotel. He calls it a bed-and-breakfast, but really it is much more than that.
Chateau de Moulin le Comtelies on the edge of the small town of Aire Sur La Lys, close to the WW1 battlefields and a short drive from the channel ports. The hotel has a verdant garden behind and is bounded on one side by the little river which contributes its name to the village.
Both the public rooms and the bedrooms are beautifully appointed. Each bedroom has a pair of top quality beds with Sealy mattresses, which can be put together to form a large double bed if you prefer.
The personal attention of Francis and his family ensure that Chateau de Moulin le Comte offers a warm and congenial atmosphere where couples, families and pets are welcomed. The area has abundant historic towns and villages with so much to see. The countryside is also ideal for walking and cycling.
The Orange and Gold Rooms are approx 30m2. They offer the choice of twin beds or a double.
The Cream Room has twin beds or a double bed for parents, and can also accommodate one or two children.
Table d'hotes is a convivial way to enjoy a dinner. And it doesn't come much better than when the meal has been prepared by Francis, always including as much local produce as possible. Table d'hotes at Chateau de Moulin le Comte has quickly established an enviable reputation.
Aperitifs can be taken in the lounge or out on the terrace.
Ample breakfasts are included in the room rates.
Places to visit:
Aire-Sur-La-Lys. Within walking distance, with so much history.
World War 1 battlefields and cemeteries.
St Omer. Gardens, lakes, cathedral and the unique "La Coupole".
Lens. The new Louvre.
"Always sorry to have to leave - the food, the welcome, the rooms and the good night's sleep are always a pleasure at this delightful hotel."
"The evening meal is fabulous, beautifully cooked and presented and very French. Can thoroughly recommend."
"Breakfasts are included in the price and are a leisurely affair in the dining room overlooking the garden. Dinner is also available provided the hosts know in advance that you intend to 'dine in'. We did this for two of our four nights and were treated to a five course meal on both occasions. Francis is the chef and his flair for cooking is evident from the first to the last course. I would strongly urge guests to 'dine in' simply to sample the beautiful dishes Francis prepares. The real bonus, however, is that the same quality 5 course dinner in any other restaurant would probably cost twice as much."
"What a find! Somewhere with real ambience and style you would never find in the UK, not at least at this price. Terrific food in a wonderful dining room and very helpful and friendly hosts. This is described as a Bed and Breakfast in some descriptions, which is an incredible understatement."
