Chateau Les Roches

Mont Saint Jean

A small country house hotel in Burgundy with a big reputation

5 rooms
Guest Rating: 9.1 / 10
Terrace, Hotel Les Roches

In the mediaeval hilltop village of Mont-Saint-Jean, Hotel Les Roches is a calm country residence built at the turn of last century by a Parisian judge for his mistress, whose face is seen on the dining room's hand-painted ceiling panels and the main entrance door's stone carving. The building blends Austrian, Swiss and German architectural styles to lend it a distinctive character. Having been restored in 2005, it became the renowned hotel that the native English and German-speaking owners have turned it into.

Les Roches has its own fitness studio including a cross trainer and bike, a multitude of weight machines and an array of dumbbells with bench. The bright salon has an enormous window and three French doors which lead on to the terrace, where breakfast and dinner is often served in the summer. As well as the books to be discovered there, the library has maps and brochures on Burgundy tourist attractions, and contacts for a selection of vineyards, plus a television with hundreds of channels in various languages. In the wine cellar, different tasting events are held, both by owners Tobias and Marco, and by local wine expert Brendan Moore.

The gardens at Les Roches have something for everyone: there is a sun-filled terrace, crunchy gravel pathways, springy verdant lawns, roses, stautes, pots and a delightful back-to-nature woodland.

Naturally each of the five bedrooms is unique, but common themes of garden views, french windows, balconies, antique furniture and tastefully light, bright paintwork run through.

Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Guestbook:

"What a robustly refined, elegant, tasteful, atmospheric, warm, cosy environment you've created! And, the food Marco prepared and presented to us was so much exactly what we enjoy and had hoped for...refined, vigorously tasty and displaying each individual flavour to exponential degree. Thank you for the fine mattress and wonderful sheets. These are all some things one can't bear not enjoying! You already know how extreme the view from our room is...and the bath water sooooooooo hot! WONDERFUL. And your wine recommendation...superb."

"Les Roches is really special - wonderfully grand but at the same time very cosy. The décor is impossibly chic and a 'less is more' approach lets the exquisite original features shine through. Tobias and Marco are great hosts and the local area feels like a slice of real rural France - a gorgeous landscape, friendly locals, amazing wildlife, pretty villages and of course delicious food and wine."

"We have returned from France with that 'vacation glow' due in no small part to our visit at Les Roches. The house is so elegant, yet so warm and inviting. We enjoyed visiting the countryside all the more because we knew we would return to Les Roches at the end of the day. Your hospitality and friendliness went well beyond the expected and we felt quite privileged to have been your guests. Thank you for all your help and the special touches which made out trip among our most enjoyable. You are both wonderful hosts. We hope to see you again on our next trip to France."

"Your kindness and hospitality have added an extra dimension to our time here. We felt totally at home, from the moment we were welcomed and everything we could have wanted was at our disposal. Our room was beautiful - waking up to a spectacular view every morning was a real treat. As were the wonderful meals we had here - Michelin should be giving a few stars here! We both feel we have made two new friends and look forward eagerly to our return. Until then, we'll have to make do with our wonderful memories."
