Le Chalet Tournesol

La Pierre, Chauffayer

Eco-hotel in the High Alps which rotates to follow the sun, like a sunflower

4 rooms
Guest Rating: 6.8 / 10
Small guest house, French Alps

Resembling a 20th century depiction of a UFO which has paid a visit to the spectacular mountain scenery of the High Alps, Le Chalet Tournesol (which means the Sunflower Chalet) is in the unique position of.... well, not staying in the same position. Mimicking the workings of a sunflower (‘Tournesol' literally means ‘Turnsun'), this wooden eco-hotel rotates to face the sun throughout the day.

The dome-shaped house has 4 bedrooms, all decked out in wood, for 2 to 4 people. These guest rooms, each with their own bathroom, are fantastically light and airy, making for a cheery ambience in their loft-like location. There is a jacuzzi for guests' relaxation, and relaxation is the name of the game here, as the owner Isabelle set out her vision for Le Chalet Tournesol as something totally peaceful. The area is stunning for mountain biking, hiking, and visiting the lakes and rivers.

Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Guestbook:

"Once again a big thank you for your welcome, your very good cuisine, the little things that show your attention to detail... the bubbles in the jacuzzi are a pure delight after a good walk round the mountain. Five days and four nights of absolute happiness. The region is really amazing and the chalet-dome integrates wonderfully into such beautiful scenery."

"A huge round of applause to Isabelle who offers more than just a 'chambre d'hôtes' and a meal. Her know-how, her knowledge of the flowers, plants and fruits of the region, which put the sparkle into her hearty and original regional meals. Breakfast is a pure joy with its homemade bread, bio yoghurts, refined jams with fine and unusual flavours.. a real pleasure. You won't be left hungry in the evening either with her homemade cordials, little dishes.. BRILL-IANT!"

"Thanks again for this unforgettable stay, with its magical decor! The welcome is warm and we hope to visit many more times. The good is excellent and substantial and the homemade jams are not to be missed."

"Thank you, thank you to both of you. It was an lovely weekend and we really recharged our batteries! A true little moment of happiness."

We Say

The slow rotation of the chalet is a fantastic touch: as it oh-so-gently trickles round in a circle, it sums up the pace of life that is offered to guests here. Of course, for those who are interested, the opportunity to explore the mountains provides a more energetic experience, but whatever you choose to do, you will have a tranquil base in Le Chalet Tournesol.
