La Pisa is a family run guesthouse located in the pretty village of Aniezo in Cantabria, close to the ancient village waterwheel ("pisa") that gives the hotel its name and an ancient packhorse bridge. Far from anywhere yet with good road communications, it is an ideal place to start to explore the Picos de Europa.
The Picos are a cornucopia of astonishing and spectacular views, and those views start right there in the garden of La Pisa. In summer the garden and terraces are great places to relax, maybe having a pre-dinner drink after an energetic day in the mountains. After dinner, retire to the bar and compare notes with the other guests.
La Pisa has 8 comfortable en-suite rooms, offering the option of double or twin beds.
The Picos de Europa offers a diverse variety of mountain scenery, pretty villages and wildlife. For the active there is walking, climbing, canyoning, mountain and road biking. For those who prefer a more relaxed holiday, there is bird watching, photography and painting.
A warm English welcome awaits visitors to La Pisa in this simple, clean, comfortable and inexpensive hotel in the spectacular mountains of northern Spain. Dinner at La Pisa is a special treat.
The restaurant provides continental breakfast of course, and a daily 3 course dinner using fresh local produce. A vegetarian menu is available.
Walking & hiking routes start right on the doorstep, and there are thousands of possibilities in the surrounding mountains.
Cycling, mountain bikes or road bikes.
Mountaineering and rock-climbing.
Places to Visit:
Potes, the nearby market town but more of a village really. Very pretty.
La Rectoría Cider museum
Santa Toribio monastery. Contains a relic which is allegedly part of the original cross.
Fuente De cable car. The longest single-span cable car ride in Europe, climbing to 2000m.
Ruta de Tresviso. A dramatic ascent climbing 850m from the Hermida Gorge to Tresviso, the village famous for its handmade blue cheese.
La Casa del Oso Cantábrico. Bear Centre dedicated to the preservation of the wild brown bears that live in the mountains.
Ruta del Cares funicular railway. The tunnel railway climbs up 2 km through the mountain to Bulnes. More energetic visitors can opt to follow the packhorse trail instead or walk down through the Cares Gorge.
Soplao Caves. Visitors enter the cave on a miners train.
Numerous quaint little villages and hamlets scattered throughout the area.
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
We stayed recently at the above. Wonderful experience. Should clone these amazing hosts and open La Pisa Posada chain all over Spain!
We much enjoyed our three nights at La Pisa, Aniezo. A most welcoming and friendly husband and wife team (English) provided excellent accommodation and meals. From its rural setting, we explored widely around the locality which is very beautiful and mountainous. The food was exceptionally good - we were consulted daily about options for evening meals - there was a wide choice.
We have just returned from staying with John and Gwen at their charming hotel La Pisa in Aniezo. The hotel is set in the most idyllic setting. A haven of peace and tranquility. They are the most fantastic hosts, friendly and welcoming and nothing too much trouble. They are very knowledgeable about the area they live in and are happy to give advice on the best places to walk and visit. We dined every night on Johns fantastic dinners, once tried we did not feel the need to dine out, he is a brilliant chef. If you are looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful setting then you cannot do better than here. Can't wait to make a return visit.
|Very good. Quiet location. Room and bathroom definitely on small side. Very pleasant helpful hosts who put themselves out to help all the guests. Thoroughly agree with comments I read about the food which is excellent. We went to Potes one evening and couldn't find decent food anywhere and after that ate at La Pisa where John's cooking was great.
Service from Little Hotels was also to be commended. We will definitely use you again.
I can highly recommend La Pisa for the warm welcome, local knowledge and fantastic food. John & Gwyneth do their very best to ensure that their guests have a great holiday of their choice. It felt as if we were staying with old friends!
Just to give you some feedback on our recent stays at Venta el Museo in Lucainena de las Torres & La Pisa in Aniezo.
We were very pleased with both hotels. The owners were very friendly & helpful, the rooms were comfortable & clean and all of the meals that we had were excellent. We would have no hesitation in recommending both of these hotels.
Hello John and Gwen,
I thought I'd send you a quick line to say what a lovely time we had at La Pisa. We particularly enjoyed your company. Its the first time we've been on holiday and not gone out every night to different restaurants or bars, it was a real home from home. Your appointed 'mingler' Tony was very professional and delightful company too, give him our regards. Your dinners remain some of the best meals we've ever had. We spent £70 on dinner last Saturday evening in a well known Italian restaurant nearby and it wasn't a patch on your meals.
We've told all our friends what a wonderful time we had and I've given your details to several of my walking buddies who expressed an interest.
My wife and I recently returned from two weeks walking in northern Spain.
We stayed 6 nights at La Pisa in Aniezo with John and Gwen, the owners.
We found the hotel delightful, clean, beautifully situated, friendly and comfortable but perhaps most memorable of all was John's cooking. When on holiday we like to eat out and explore different restaurants but after dining in on the first night we ate there every night of our stay, it was exceptional, very varied and an excitingly different blend of Spanish, mediterranean and English cuisine.
We are interested in bird life and John was knowledgeable and helpful, giving us invaluable suggestions for walks etc.
We were very sad to leave.
Excellent hotel, lovely location, ideal for exploring the Picos, delightful owners who were able to advise us on where to go in the short time we were there. The holiday was made the more enjoyable by the excellent cooking undertaken by 'mine host'. Worth every penny of the supplement.
