Something we at Little Hotels are delighted to see is a blend of old and new. For a hotel to find the natural harmony of both is not the work of a moment, but we are pleased to see it's been achieved so successfully by Sonia and Miguel here in the historic town of Garachico. This means a restored 18th century country house by the seaside, with lovely wooden beamed ceilings in the guest rooms and the exterior stone wall that frames this intimate little residence; it also means the way the mod-cons fit cleanly and effortlessly into the spacious rooms, contemporary wooden flooring and stylish and pretty bathrooms. It's not a juxtaposition of features, but a mix that brings out the best in the building and simply provides attractive and appealing accommodation: neither overtly contemporary, nor deliberately traditional, the focus is on attraction, space, and a timelessly beautiful hotel.

Gara is right in the middle of this little town and looks out on the sea front, with its terrace a perfect spot to relax in front of the rugged rocky coastline. There is just one avenue between the hotel and the coastline. Just in front of the shore is the little San Miguel Castle, one of the most distinct survivors of a volcanic eruption in 1706.

There is an enormous swimming pool mere footsteps from the hotel that guests can use for free, as well as the nearby natural pool on the edge of the sea.

The sixteen rooms are spread over two floors, with two of them being dedicated singles also allowing for a twin room set-up and two specifically prepared for disabled guests. Sonia told us that 'neatness' was an important aspect to the rooms. We take this to mean the "clean" design and layout. The rooms are uncluttered and display plenty of old-style furnishings, amalgamating the newer features into them easily, such as plasma TVs and fridges.

A final note on the definition of 'hotel rural'. Many of our visitors may form a natural association of such a term with tiny villages or almost entirely unpopulated areas. Although Garachico is a small town, it is a 'casco historico' (preserved, historic town) in which the hotel blends nicely, and 'rural' is an official definition as determined by the size of the town and the number of rooms, fewer than twenty.

We Say

The stand-out feature of Gara Hotel is the beautiful position right beside the sea,  with the castle tower in front and the rocky coast extending to either side. Very pretty, and in a very peaceful part of the island.
