Hotel Rural Las Calas
, El Arenal, 36, San Mateo, Gran Canaria.
Hotel Rural Las Calas is a traditional Canary Island country house with parts dating from the 17th century, now run as a delightful little countryside hotel. It nestles gently in the hamlet of La Lechuza, right in the heart of Gran Canaria. The house was renovated and converted to a hotel in 1999, and is decorated with traditional furniture with clear Arabic and African influences. It is an ideal place to take a break in a tranquil friendly atmosphere oozing with country charm, surrounded by gardens and indigenous vegetation that attracts a great variety of species of birds. All around, La Vega de San Mateo has protected nature reserves of ancient vegetation and an old watermill.
Las Calas provides seven unique guest rooms, being a mixture of double rooms, junior suites and a suite. All are decorated in a charmingly original and rustic style with lots of natural stone and wood, and equipped with private bathroom / shower, hair dryer, local TV with satellite channels, safe deposit box and a mini-bar. The hotel amenities include a bar, restaurant, room service, laundry and ironing services, a luggage room, internet access, swimming pool, sun terrace, private garage & car park and an astonishingly beautiful semi-tropical garden.
Las Calas is a perfect place to relax, and for playing golf, horse riding and walking in the beautiful countryside of Gran Canaria.

Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
We had a most enjoyable holiday in Gran Canaria. The Hotel Las Calas was quaint, with under 10 rooms. However The Hotel was in need of smartening up. Our room had a toilet roll holder that allowed the paper to fall off and the glass shower screen did not fit so water constantly leaked onto the floor. We had a great heated towel rail in our bathroom. The TV was very modern but we did not manage to find English programmes. The owner spoke little English but we found her pleasant. The main worker /chef spoke excellent English and was most helpful and always smiling. The food was very average, breakfasts were the same each day with excellent orange juice and coffee. Dinner was 3 courses but basic, and meals were repeated, however we were given the option of something different when we had had the same food on a previous night. The guests had a little room with a fire and tiny bar. However guests had to light the fire, you could make your own tea or coffee at any time, and drinks were brought from the kitchen it was very simple wine or gin, which most nights we made ourselves. The cups and glasses were often left for a few days in this room unwashed. Housekeeping in the bedrooms was poor. beds were not properly made and the soap and shampoo was of a poor quality. Another guest area had plenty of maps and description of walks, which you were allowed to take out for the day. There were plenty of loval books on many aspects of Gran Canaria. and guests also gave advice to one another. There was a little seating area by the tiny pool, and also a covered area for hotter weather. It was a pleasant stay and well situated for walking. We felt at home and guests were most pleasant. The price was too high for the standard and we noted that other guests, who had booked with other companies had paid considerable less than us. Something to negotiate! I would advise anyone going walking to take or buy locally walking sticks as the terrain was very dry and slippery. 2 of us used bamboo canes that we found. A very enjoyable holiday. Little Hotels Comment re Price: Remember the Little Hotels Price Promise. The rate charged by the hotel to Little Hotels' guests should be at least as good as that found anywhere else on the internet. Perhaps the cheaper rate mentioned had been a short-term special offer. |
Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Guestbook:
Just returned from a week's stay at this beautiful hotel. Great breakfasts, fresh fruit available all day. Reading room in a nice lounge, courtyard with comfy chairs to relax in. Friendly staff and soothing ambience. Las Calas has its own Dining Room serving traditional Canarian food and very good house wine every evening. The perfect retreat after a hard day sightseeing or walking. |
I have the good fortune to live just a few miles from La Lechuza and had the pleasure of watching the restoration of this 17th Century, Arabic influenced mansion, as it was converted into the hotel. It has been beautifully done: in harmony with the original and maintaining the ambience. Service and attention that I have encountered in public areas is excellent and friendly. |
What a charming place and totally different from anywhere else. It is quite unique.H.H. |
