It's impossible to find a small hotel on the favoured south-west coast of Tenerife, but we are in no doubt that El Mirador is a very worthy addition to Little Hotels. The staff are wonderful, friendly and always with time to pause for a chat, and the facilities are beyond compare.

El Mirador sits in an enviable position beside a sandy beach, facing south-west to catch the sun. Almost all the rooms have a sea view and look out over the main swimming pool and the garden terrace. There are plenty of sunbeds, bali-beds and parasols, so along with some palm trees it is always easy to choose between sun and shade. Waiters waft to and fro, always ready to bring you a refreshing drink or a lunchtime snack.

The buffet restaurant has a different theme for the buffet each night of the week, along with a main course of your choice. This is also the place for breakfast, where the selection of dishes is quite astonishing. For an a la carte dinner, there is the poolside La Pergola restaurant, while the El Cenador gourmet restaurant offers an exclusive dining experience. All three restaurants provide both indoor outdoor tables according to choice.

The bar is also divided into indoor and outdoor spaces and there is a tasteful entertainment each evening.

For energetic guests there are top quality squash courts and a superbly equipped fitness centre with a sea view. Other guests may prefer the spa, which matches the superb luxury of the rest of the hotel and provides an ample choice of massages and treatments.

Most of the guest rooms are Sea-view Junior Suites, and they provide just about everything that anyone could ask for. They are spacious, with a comfortable super-kingsize bed, a generous sitting area and a big balcony. There is a multiplicity of cupboards and drawers, and a separate walk-in wardrobe/dressing-room so storage is never a problem no matter how many clothes you bring. And empty cases can be stored out of sight for the duration of your holiday. Balconies vary a little, some having a table and chairs, others a pair of sunbeds, and many have both. At the top-of-the-range, the Star Prestige rooms feature even more exceptional facilities including exclusive terraces and pool, and a butler.

Just below the hotel is a small cluster of restaurants, beach bars and up-market shops. The promenade of Costa Adeje's "golden mile" runs all along the coast here so it is a comfortable stroll down to Playa Las Americas or up to La Caleta in the other direction. Playa del Duque beach is right in front, with golden sand at one end and black volcanic sand at the other.
