Dating back to the time of the French Revolution, La Bonne Auberge is a cluster of thatched timber-framed cottages that are packed with old-world character. The river Seine passes by at the bottom of the garden while the Brotonne forest is all around. The large garden contains many mature trees and there are terraces directly overlooking the river.

The interior of the hotel reflects the full history and character, and even the construction, of the cottages with wooden frames, heavy beams and terracotta floors. This is followed by the furniture and fabrics too, creating a warm and integrated whole.

Each of the guest rooms and suites features a view of the garden and river and a private terrace with outdoor furniture. The smallest room is 32m2, and they range up to 48m2 for the Bellevue Suite. Comprehensive facilities include a private entrance, tea and coffee-making in the room, bottled water, allergy-free bedding, bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer and a bath and shower.

Breakfasts served in the dining room are delicious and substantial. Think “full English”, unless you really prefer “continental”. Dinner is also available and there is a barbecue in the garden.

The illustrious past of La Bonne Auberge includes visits by writers Guy de Maupassant and Victor Hugo, and artist William Turner who produced three paintings here.

The hotel has it’s own motor launch on the Seine, so private boat trips can be arranged.
