Elsie and Micha will welcome you to Maison Aguerria, their boutique country B&B high in the Pyrenees, in the heart of the French Basque country near the Spanish border. The house was built in 1800 in typical Navarre style with its robust walls and colourful detailing. On the terrace or the balcony you can enjoy the panoramic view of the green valley and the mountains.
Every day, an excellent breakfast includes freshly-squeezed orange juice, lots of fresh fruit and breads and croissants with local preserves. Twice weekly Maison Aguerria offers an optional dinner which picks up the typical Basque style and features everything local, pure and fresh. Elsie considers Basque cuisine to be one of the most innovative and creative in the world, and she may well be right. Certainly the region is well-endowed with Michelin-starred restaurants and other excellent eateries, so guests won’t be struggling for choice on the other five nights.
The guest rooms have been decorated in two styles, warm and romantic on the first floor and very modern on the second. On both levels a broad central hallway provides some lounge seating, a library and a chess table. The second floor hallway leads to a balcony with the best views, though the views are pretty impressive from every window. All the rooms feature satellite TV, a DVD player, wi-fi and a spacious bathroom.
The Aldudes area is an excellent destination for hikers and nature lovers. Like many other areas, the Pyrenees in summer offer countless opportunities for walking, cycling, or just touring by car or motorcycle. In addition the many rivers and streams are ideal for kayaking and white-water rafting. All along the northern edge of the mountains there are ancient Basque villages with their distinctive architecture and culture.
