The Highdown.
Littlehampton Rd, Goring-by-Sea.
The Highdown was built in 1820 as the family home of a well-to-do family in a beautiful spot that enjoys views towards the South Downs on one side and the sea on the other. Now sitting alongside Highdown Gardens, it is a popular hotel, pub and restaurant.
The pub sits at the heart of the building, beautifully appointed and offering an array of local ales and a back bar crammed with gins and whiskies. Meanwhile the restaurant is everything you would expect of a Victorian country house, with plush fabrics, rich woods, large casement windows and comfortable furniture. The menus are built around a core of classic British dishes complemented by more exotic influences from other parts of the world. Of prime importance is the use of fresh ingredients prepared, cooked and presented in a modern but unpretentious way. The hotel even has a separate tea room, near the entrance to the gardens, serving sandwiches, toasties, cakes and a variety of teas and coffees.
There are thirteen bedrooms ranging from Classic through to Suite, all of which are spacious, comfortable, and feature everything you would expect from a modern hotel. Some rooms will accommodate a third guest on a fold-out bed. Every room features a contemporary take on period features, free wi-fi, a king-size Hypnos bed (or twin) and a bathroom with a rain shower and complimentary L’Occitane toiletries. There is also a tea and coffee maker and the Superior Rooms and Suites also have a roll top bath in addition to the shower.
The Highdown country house hotel is situated on the edge of the South Downs National Park just a couple of miles from the sea. Arundel Castle is about 5 miles away and Goodwood House (plus the race circuit and the horse-race course) are just 13 miles.
We Say
Absolutely the archetypal English country house.
