Lowthwaite is a cottage property situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, only four miles from Ullswater with views of Helvellyn and Blencathra. It is owned and run by a couple who are utterly dedicated to walking and hiking on the Lake District fells.

Most of the food served at Lowthwaite is homemade. Breads, jams and marmalades, muffins and cakes, and granola are all made in Louthwaite's own kitchen. For cooked breakfast there is a traditional full English breakfast, as well as several other hot options including fried haloumi, Belgian waffles and American pancakes. The buffet is laden with homemade breads, a fruit salad or fruit compote, homemade granola, muesli with nuts, seeds, and dried fruit, a choice of homemade jams, marmalades, and spreads, yoghurts and fruit juices. As well as vegetarian options there is also the choice to go for a 'take away' breakfast, giving the chance make an early start on a long hike or journey. For a day on the fells or for flexibility on a touring day, there is a small 'packed lunch' menu.

Lowthwaite has four bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms with showers and baths. Most of the furniture is handmade from Tanzania using recycled wood from old arab dhows. The two upstairs rooms both have sitting areas (one settee can be converted to a third bed) and can be made interconnecting for a family group. The Blencathra room is a duplex suite formed from the old tractor shed downstairs and the granary above. The Garden room has a private patio often frequented by local wildlife including red squirrels.

Before coming to the Lake District Jim and Tine ran Kilimanjaro climbing treks in Tanzania. Now they have directed their passion towards the fells of the Lake District so guests are assured of good knowledgable advice on suitable nearby walking routes for all abilities.
