The Old Hall Country House.
Poolside, Madeley, Staffordshire.
The Old Hall is one of those places that exceeds expectations. Yes, it's a characterful timber-framed luxury B&B, and then you see the garden! The rooms are comfortable with every facility, and then you spot the sherry decanter!
Let's start with that garden: two acres of beautifully manicured lawns, trees, paths, herbaceous borders and a large pond with goldfish and water-lilies. Close to the house is an expansive terrace with chairs, tables, sunshades and loungers. Indoors there is the peaceful Orangery lounge with wicker chairs and a view onto the garden.
A cooked breakfast is served daily in the charming dining room. The menu is extensive and all prepared to perfection. For other meals there are restaurants nearby and also a selection of take-aways. Guests are welcome to order in a take-away and the owners will provide crockery, cutlery and glassware to either eat on the terrace or indoors.
The spacious en-suite bedrooms are elegantly furnished with 100% Egyptian cotton sheets and a flat-screen TV. King Charles II stayed at the Old Hall during the civil war, and may have actually slept in the room that bears his name. This and the Queen Margaret room are in the Tudor part of the building and furnished appropriately. The other two rooms are in the Victorian extension and they too reflect their heritage.
Madeley is a pretty village and the River Lea and the millpond make a pleasant stroll just yards from the front door. Nearby are the Stoke on Trent Potteries Museum and art galleries, Trentham Gardens, the Trentham Monkey Forest, the Dorothy Clive Gardens, and much more.
