Pentillie Castle and Estate
, Paynters Cross, St Mellion, St Mellion.
Pentillie Castle is a family-run 5-star boutique bed and breakfast set on a 2,000 acre private estate on the bank of the River Tamar. This spectacular setting just 20 minutes from Plymouth includes 55 acres of woodland gardens to explore, with hidden gems such as the Stone Circle, Mausoleum and Kitchen Gardens.
The day at Pentillie starts with an exceptional breakfast which has won gold awards from both the AA and Visit England. Although the Coryton family describe their hotel as a boutique B&B, the food offerings don’t stop there. Every Sunday, Monday and Thursday the chef serves up a Cornish afternoon tea with home made sandwiches, savoury treats, cakes and scones and freshly made tea or coffee. You can also add a glass of Prosecco or a Gin and Tonic.
For Bed and Breakfast guests, D-I-Y suppers are very popular and enable you to make the most of the cosy farmhouse-style kitchen and your evening at Pentillie. The table will be laid, and when you are ready to eat, you just pop your main course in the AGA, open a bottle of wine, and wait approximately 20 minutes for it to be piping hot. Hey presto! Home from home, but without the washing up! Dishes vary but often include; lasagne, fish pie, quiches, ploughman’s and curry, with a selection of vegetarian and vegan options available. There are puddings too, and they all come with proper Cornish clotted cream. Last but not least, a more formal ‘Dinner in the Castle’ is offered on select evenings throughout the month, taken in the main dining room of the castle.
The nine en-suite bedrooms are individually decorated and equipped to exceptionally high standards with a particular emphasis on comfort and good service. The atmosphere is more relaxed than a formal hotel, but the Castle is still rated 5-star for accommodation and amenities. All the upstairs bedrooms have views of the countryside or the River Tamar, and they are notably spacious with beds ranging from big to huge. There is also a ground floor double room for guests with limited mobility. This was designed by a MS sufferer so he made absolutely sure the room was designed correctly.
The first class facilities at Pentillie Castle include a large comfortable drawing room with an open fire, a smaller morning room with a fire and TV, a games room with pool and table football, a dartboard and a television. In the garden is the solar-heated swimming pool surrounded by old stone walls and wisteria and a selection of garden games; croquet, boules and giant jenga.
The Pentillie Estate is a destination in itself, but it also provides easy access Plymouth, Cotehele House, Buckland Abbey, Morwellham Quay, the Eden Project, Looe, Polperro and Tavistock.
