Well-placed for visiting a range of popular towns and cities, Masia Arianella Can Coral is a 150 year-old building now made into a b&b. Both Barcelona and Tarragona are an hour away, while the major attraction for many will be the proximity to the vineyards and wineries of Catalunya's wine and cava region, which surround the masia (country house). One of the most famous names in local viticulture is Cordoniu, for their cava, and the masia is delighted to help guests arrange visits here and to various other wineries to sample the regional delights.
Well sited on a hillside with stunning views down to a valley of vineyards, this former farm property retains its country charm and provides a laidback atmosphere for its guests, a natural consequence of the friendly and relaxed welcome of the owners Ariane and Rainer. There are plenty of places to relax, be it under the sun by the swimming pool overlooking the green scenery all around, or in the courtyard under the shade of the trees.
Each guest room is named after a Mediterranean fruit, and Ariane and Rainer have sought to give them all individuality, whether the variation is the addition of a four-poster bed, a private terrace or perhaps an open fireplace. Most rooms have an en-suite bathroom and they all have a private bathroom. There is even a self-catering apartment for four: this has two bedrooms (one double and a twin), a bathroom, open-plan kitchen and dining area and a living room with TV and DVD player and music system. It also has its own south-facing private terrace.
Ariane and Rainer can also arrange all kinds of excursions, both wine tours and many other suggestions that you may be interested in. Sitges with its beautiful white beaches is just half an hour away, as is the fantastic Vilafranca del Penedès with its spectacular culture of the ‘Castells'- shows of human castles in the square, with people climbing multi-layers high on each other's shoulders at fiesta time. There is also a wine museum in the town.
The hotel closes during the winter time, but the two apartments remain available all year.

Reviews
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
I spent lovely 3 days and nights at Arianella in Can Coral, Penedes, close to Barcelona. The place was very tidy and cosy, with good service and facilities. The surroundings was very peaceful and beautiful which was exactly what I looked for from the mini holidays. Warm recommendation to anyone who is looking for a lovely rural destination with modern facilities and good service. |
Just a few words to say that overall we were very satisfied with Rainer and Arianne's little hotel at Torrelles de Foix for our three nights, July 21 22 and 23.
Pluses: We all really enjoyed the breakfast set-up, and the food quality and variety was good. We actually got to 'eat local' with the Torrelles de Foix yogurts. My wife and I loved the pool at night, my daughter enjoyed the outdoor cat and having the chance to meet holidaying Brits and Dutch. Our junior suite up the stairs was a nice set-up for the three of us, a good amount of space. Rainer and Arianne are very welcoming, and Rainer had really excellent driving directions that weren't immediately clear on any road map in our possession. The honour bar was lovely. The view down into the vineyards from the pool area is very special. The place is kept spotlessly clean, quite a challenge for an older property with all its nooks and crannies. Thanks again.
Neutral: During our stay, the weather was extremely hot, each day the highs were in the mid-30s C, and the room was super hot at the end of the day, which we were able to mitigate at night with air flow between two exterior windows and the ceiling fan, however the window screens had openings on a couple of edges which let in a few mosquitoes. We solved this with a little masking tape. In the end it was nice to be in a place that was not full of cookie-cutter air conditioned Holiday Inn rooms with windows that don't open. Security issues require that the front gate be locked and that there be bars on the room's windows even though we're upstairs, I suppose because there was a roof area outside each window. This is a surprise for Canadians, but we understand that it is not a situation unique to this hotel. Just curious about egress, where we'd head in a fire if the only way out of the wooden floored room is literally down a narrow wooden interior staircase that leads into a small windowless room which then has one other door that leads into yet another interior space.
Minuses: The exurban subdivision around the hotel has really been built up over the past few years, so for a place sold as 'romantic country tourism' it was a long way to drive through the countryside to be hard up against neighbouring houses, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. Yes the neighbours were quiet, but the number of guard dogs barking in the early morning was just off-putting.
Thanks for your assistance with our booking, and we're looking forward to our next trip.
Little Hotels' comment:
The bars on the windows are not really for security: they are a common decorative architectural feature in Spain known as "rejas". They reflect a time when Spanish country cottages had no glass; just the rejas and wooden shutters. |
