The mountains of Andalucia encompass a wonderland of extraordinary landscapes, and many of them can be seen from the windows of the Hotel La Fuente del Sol. The hotel has been an award-winner as the best rural hotel in Malaga province, and it's easy to see why. It is at one with its surroundings; white walls, wooden ceilings, clay tile floors, a garden full of herbs and flowers. Around it there is the Guadalhorce valley, the huge rock outcrop of El Torcal, the amazingly historic town of Antequera and a lake that is home to thousands of flamingos.

There is plenty of space to relax at La Fuente del Sol, as guests choose from the stone-paved patio, the extensive lawns or the terrace by the pool. Wherever they choose, the views are always there. Even inside, making use of the wonderful spa facilities, the huge windows keep those views and the countryside always at hand.

There are 14 guest rooms ranging from the excellent standard doubles with their comfortable country character and up through the various suites which afford sumptuous materials, oodles of space and, here comes that word again, the greatest views. Depending on their position, some rooms have ground floor access to the surrounding terrace, and some have balconies, a small terrace or in the case of the Imperial Suite, a huge private terrace. All rooms are have rustic ceilings and wooden windows, telephone, digital TV with DVD, hairdryer, minibar, underfloor heating, wi-fi, safe box and a cosy quiet atmosphere.

150 million years in the making, El Torcal is a remarkable piece of natural sculpture, inviting visitors to partake of easy walks, extended hikes, rock-climbing, horse-riding or mountain-biking. The town of Antequera is a microcosm of every era of Spanish civilisation, from 5000 year-old Neolithic monuments, through the Iberians, the Roman period, the Moors, the Christian reconquest, right up to the elegant townhouses of recent centuries. And if anyone hankers for the Mediterranean sea that they can see in the distance, that's only a 60 minute drive away too.

We Say

For any visitors not familiar with night time far away from a town or city, the clear skies and lack of light pollution are a revelation. Just lie on your back and gaze up at the millions of stars. Pick out the constellations, planets and maybe even the odd man-made orbiting satellite. Amazing.
