We find the Hotel Son Sant Jordi in the little square of Sant Jordi, right in the village centre. It's an old village house, charmingly converted, offering a peaceful atmosphere, friendly service and a chance to sit out front and watch the world go by. This really is a perfect location to enjoy the charm of the village life and yet to be in easy reach of a long stretch of clean sandy beach at Puerto Pollenca.

This friendly family hotel is an authentic old building with beamed ceilings everywhere, that has been very sympathetically restored. It has a terrace facing out onto the village square and a quiet private garden of palm trees, shrubs, lawns and a swimming pool. There's plenty of room to sunbathe, or sit under the shade of the Mallorcan porch and reflect on the simple pleasures that life can bring. The Wellness Centre has a sauna, jacuzzi and a Turkish bath.

Inside, the hotel is a rich mix of country style, and the spacious rooms are highly individual, reflecting a combination of rustic, classical and traditional Mallorquin. Of course, the rooms are fully equipped with en-suite bathroom, satellite TV, minibar, aircon and telephone. There are also two apartments with a kitchen and terrace in an adjoining building.

For visitors looking for a beach holiday with a little more ambience, this is ideal. Pollenca is a wonderful old town with a maze of tiny streets, and great restaurants, bars and shops. The beach at Puerto Pollensa is just 6 km away, and this is a holiday town that has all the right facilities without the raw commercialism of bigger resorts. For those with more energetic ambitions, there is excellent walking and cycling in the countryside around, the spectacular Formentor peninsula is nearby, there are sailing lessons on hand, or maybe you would prefer to try Spanish classes or local wine-tasting. Pick your time of year to visit the music festival or art exhibitions.
