Hotel Katxi (pronounced "Catchy") is a friendly adults-only nine-room hotel located in the village of Morga, close to the coastline of the Bay of Biscay. Since 1984 the area has been designated as a World Heritage Site and Biosphere reserve.
Hotel Katxi is a relatively new hotel built in the typical "caserío" style of the region with the deep eaves that, along with the majestic mountains and valleys, help to give the country landscape an alpine feel. The area around the hotel is green and fragrant and full of birds. This is an ideal spot to explore the hills, mountains and coast of the Basque Country as well as visiting the Guggenheim Museum and other sights of Bilbao.
The bright rooms in this delightful hotel are individually and distinctively decorated with softly upholstered furniture, comfortable beds with 100% cotton sheets, feather eiderdowns and lots of windows. There are CD and DVD players and some of the bathrooms have hydromassage baths (suite and junior suite).
The reception and lounge of the Hotel Katxi have a warm ambience with a big fireplace, music, books, films, etc. and flowers everywhere. Outside there are pleasant gardens and terrace that is ideal for sitting back with cool drink to look out on the countryside and bathe yourself in the unique light of Euskadi.
Double garden view
Situated on the main level of the hotel with views of the garden.
Junior Suite

Meals
Hotel Katxi grew out of the Katxi Restaurant, which first opened in 1816 and has been passed down the family from generation to generation. It is open for lunches and dinners, with a traditional menu enhanced with some more international touches. Closed Mondays and Sunday evenings.
Continental breakfast is served daily in the bar area (separately priced).

Walking and cycling: The Basque Country is rich in opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors. Try the rolling hills of the countryside near the hotel, or the more mountainous terrain a little further inland (Durango, for example). Or wander along the edges of the estuary between Mundaka and Murieta.
Travel along the rugged coast of Vizcaya, visiting the pretty little fishing villages and seaside resorts along the the way (Plentzia, Bakio, Bermeo, Mundaka, for example).
Golf: As ever, you're never far from a golf course.
Surfing: Try surfing in the long waves of the estuary near Mundaka
Beaches: Lots of lovely beaches along this piece of coast. The nearest is just 15 km away.
Guernica: See the ancient tree and the slightly newer Meeting House of the Basque Parliament. There is also an interesting museum here.
Bilbao: The Guggenheim museum is the most famous attraction, and rightly so. However, take time to walk around the Casco Viejo (old quarter), see the Basque Country museum, potter down to the beach at Las Arenas, have a meal in one of the restaurants in Getxo, or ride up the funicular railway to see the old mining villages near Trapagaran.
Reviews
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
We spent two nights at Hotel Katxi and had a fantastic welcome. The hotel was beautiful, it had greats views and was beautifully appointed set in a beautiful quiet village. We had extraordinary service from Miriam who made us feel very welcome. She was particularly helpful in enabling us to get into Bilbao on public transport. To assist us she took us in her car to the bus stop in the next village and researched the timetables for us for our return. Would highly recommend this hotel. |
We have just returned from a terrific week in the Bilbao area made all the more enjoyable by our stay at the delightful Hotel Katxi.
From the moment we arrived after our short drive from the airport we were made to feel very welcome, more like returning friends than hotel guests. Our room overlooked the ground floor terrace and had a view across the open countryside and hills.
Miriam, who we took to be the owner, or not, definitely the person in charge on a daily basis, couldn’t have been more helpful with tips and advice on things to do in the local area and further afield, always wanting to know how our day had been on our return.
The room was spacious and comfortable with a large walk-in shower in the bathroom. Little touches such as good quality toiletries and even spare toothbrushes and a razor were provided as standard. This is the sort of service you normally have to ask for in larger, more expensive hotels. The bed was enormous and very comfortable with linen changed every other day. Small mini-bar with beer, soft drinks and spirits at ordinary bar prices. Each night we returned to find Mirian had left some fresh fruit in the fridge - again another unexpected but welcome touch.
The hotel itself does not provide meals. However, breakfast can be obtained at the Katxi restaurant at the end of the drive and this is also open for dinner and drinks Tuesday to Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes. The restaurant serves very good local food at moderate prices and although the staff do not speak English, they make every effort to ensure we were well looked after and all our food and drink requirements catered for.
We would have no hesitation in recommending the Katxi as an excellent small hotel in this enchanting part of Spain. Nearby attractions are Gernika (7 miles), Bilbao (12 miles) and numerous clean, safe, sandy beaches all within about half an hour’s drive along quiet if hilly and winding roads. |
We are just back from our 3 weeks in France, which started off in Spain. Sadly, we did not get your message about the hotel restaurant as we had already left by then, and were looking forward to a techno -free holiday!
Although we could not eat at Hotel Katxi, we would like to reinforce everyone elses comments about how lovely it is. Miriam herself is simply charming, so welcoming and friendly, and the room we had was better than many 'posh' hotels we have stayed in, with the most gorgeous bathroom with robes, goodies etc. I believe we were upgraded, as we were the only guests that night. We have recommended it to all our friends as an ideal place to stay if visiting Bilbao, and would certainly return if we were visisting the Basque region.
It did prove almost impossible to find anywhere to eat - Miriam suggested we went to Gernika, but by the time we got there (we had spent the day in Bilbao after coming off the ferry from Portsmouth) the two restaurants we came across were shut- suprising for Spain, but it was a Tuesday night. We finally managed to get a bocadillo and a beer in a wee bar, which kept us going till the morning!!
Thank you again for your excellent website, to which I am sure we will return. We did stay in a wonderful chambres d'hotes in Brive in France, which we thought merited being on your books- the phrase 'petit dejeuner' has never been less appropriate! |
I would really like to say that the Katxi hotel was excellent!!! The highest standard of accomodation and service (5*****) !
And so friendly.......SHAME WE ONLY HAD TIME FOR THE 1 NIGHT

Our stay at Hotel Katxi andra mari was perfect. The hotel is beautifully decorated and maintained to a very high standard. Lots of very useful maps and informations about the area were placed in our room and the hostess was a mine of information and extremely helpful when we inadvertantly collected a parking ticket in Gernika. We shall certainly recommend Little Hotels of Spain to our friends. |

We Say
Vizcaya is a perfect centre for a holiday, with so much to see and do. At Hotel Katxi you are ideally positioned with mountains to one side, sea and coastline on another and the city of Bilbao on the third. Miryam and her staff at Hotel Katxi have created a warm and welcoming little hotel that will make you feel very much at home. People who visit the Basque Country for the first time are always surprised and amazed at its variety and beauty (I was!).
A Word from the Owner
Come to Katxi to realise your dreams, lose yourself in the beauty of the area and leave the pressures of real life behind you. Our hotel motto is 'COMODIDAD, CALIDAD y CALIDEZ' (comfort, quality and warmth).
