Ideally situated on the edge of the Sierra Espuña Natural Park, this unpretentious little hotel offers an intimate and homely atmosphere for nature-lovers. Visitors to La Mariposa can explore the Espuña with maps provided by the hotel, or relax by the private pool and sunbathing area. The hotel even hires mountain bikes and organises quad trips, and can also provide a guide for more ambitious walking trips into the mountains of the sierra.
There are double and triple bedrooms, an apartment and a family room (two bedrooms). All rooms are situated around a central courtyard that overlooks the gardens and pool, The rooms are en-suite and have central heating and ceiling fans.
The courtyard is the ideal place to enjoy that cool drink, or a lunch or dinner prepared by Sam. The dining room opens for breakfast, and then serves lunchtime and evening menus. A bar nestles in the corner of the dining room together with comfortable sofas. There is also satellite television to provide your favourite programmes, but really the Sierra Espuña is an area to get outside and go exploring. There is a permanent exhibition of paintings by local artists throughout the hotel.
There is good disabled access in most of the hotel, including one specially adapted bedroom, and there are even wheelchair ramps in the garden. Also the pool has a safety fence for the protection of children. Indeed, this is a very family-friendly hotel, as one might expect from mine-hosts with their own young family.

Reviews
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
The hotel is in a great location with a fantastic terrace for chilling out and dining. Our stay was very enjoyable thanks to Tom, the owner's son, who served a delicious dinner in a very professional and enthusiastic manner. Even when preparing tables for dinner he took time out to share with us his wealth of knowledge about the local area, Cartagena and Granada. His advice on what to see in Cartagena was very helpful.
The room was much better than we were expecting from the description on the website. It was a good size with a very comfortable bed and large shower room. It's a shame that the towels were very worn and not very white.
We would stay at the hotel again because of the location, the great food and Tom of course. |
This hotel was excellent value for money.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
The food was of great quality.
We only stayed for one night but we would recommend the hotel and we may well visit again. |
Just a quick note to say we had a great time at this hotel. The hotel was excellent value with great service from this English family who own and run it. We would recommend this hotel for anyone who is looking for a 'getaway' from it all break, if you are looking for commercialism and bright lights this isn't the one for you. |
I had mixed up my areas in Spain and booked a hotel through u in the wrong area. The hotel manager and yourselves were unbelievably understanding and sorted it all out for us. We were extremely grateful and will certainly use u again. The Mariposa hotel was lovely with a warm family atmosphere and value for money. We would def stay there if we were returning to that area. Only thing was the showers weren't great. |

We Say
La Mariposa is a truly down-to-earth little rural hotel, with a warm, friendly atmosphere. It's ideally placed for all sorts of outdoor activities in the Sierra Espuña. Disabled access is much better than most rural hotels and it's child-friendly too.
A Word from the Owner
We do not only welcome the activity enthusiasts: our hotel is very peaceful and tranquil for those wanting to relax. The area is ripe to explore and perfect if its the 'real Spain' that you want to see.
