The Hotel Rural Mas Fontanelles is a 200 year-old "masía" (Valencian farmhouse) which has been carefully restored to retain all its original charm and character. It sits in an area of great natural beauty at the foot of the Sierra de Fontanella. The mountains and pine woods are full of pathways which can be explored on foot or by bike.
The eight guestrooms of the hotel are spacious, sunny and appropriately furnished with restored country antiques. Six of them have high sloping ceilings, one has its own terrace while two others have a balcony, and two have sleeping galleries with an extra bed. No impersonal room numbers here: each room is named after a tree; orange, almond, etc.
Blue and ochre are the colours of the interior, reflecting the colours of the sky and the landscape outside, while the floors are of natural tiles and wood. Isabel (the owner) is an accomplished artist so you will find her works and others by her mother hung everywhere, mostly landscapes portraying the calm and light of the local countryside.
Superb views from the house enable guests to appreciate the pine woods surrounding the masía or the vistas out over the Benejama valley, full of olive trees, pines and almonds. After a long day out, you can return to Mas Fontanelles to wind down completely, choosing between the welcoming little lounge on the first floor or the warm and spacious salon up above where there is a library and a collection of games. Or maybe you'll settle yourself out on the terrace for a sundowner or take a swim in the recently-added swimming pool.
This lovely house sits in almost an acre of garden; the shade of the ancient pine and cypress trees offers a pleasing place to sit and relax. Just nearby is a natural spring where passers-by will stop for a drink of the freshest mineral water possible. This is also the ideal starting point for following the many local hiking routes, for walkers, horse-riders and cyclists.
Cottage Room
The cottage is separated from the main building by an enclosed garden which gives access to this room. It is the biggest double room and has a loft-balcony with an extra bed (futon style).
Meals
Here you can enjoy typical home-made Mediterranean food prepared by the owners, combined on occasions with other dishes inspired by French and Italian cuisine. All of the sweets, along with the breakfast preserves, bread and pastries are made at Mas Fontanelles.
Tables for dinner must be reserved in advance.

Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
We had a great stay at this charming small hotel. Very nice bedrooms and communal spaces and spacious garden. The hosts were very welcoming and helpful with information about walking in the area. We did some nice walks and then enjoyed relaxing by the lovely pool. Enjoyed a great meal at the hotel 1 night. The hotel is also close to a small town with several restaurants. A great place for a short break-highly recommended! |
The hotel was rustic and comfortable, although the approach to the front door was very rough, uneven and walking to the door was difficult.
As for the cleanliness I would rate it quite highly and the cleaning staff very pleasant indeed.
The breakfast was good and plentiful.
The bedroom and bathroom had all that was required and, again, always clean. The A/C in the bedroom was efficient and very quiet, making sleeping comfortable in outdoor temperatures of 38c!!!!
The dinner was a non-event and after eating in the dining room the first evening, we decided to eat elsewhere for the duration of our holiday. There was no choice for dinner and the three courses were placed in front of you, whether you liked it or not.
The outside areas, including the pool were, again, adequate. The pool was of a good size, with plenty of loungers.
We enjoyed our stay at the hotel, even though we chose to dine, both at a hotel in Biar and a very good restaurant, recommended to us by the owner of Mas Fontanelles. |
My daughter and I have recently stayed for four nights at this rural hotel near Bihar.
We would be pleased to recommend it in every way.
Its situation, just four km from Bihar was convenient yet quiet. The whole house is attractive and comfortable, with a large, lovely lounge.
Our own room was cosy, important on January nights.
Breakfasts were superb, including ham and cheese and huge pieces of scrumpious home-made cake.
Isabel was keen to make sure everything was fine for us, and as a walker herself, provided us with lots of information and guidance about walking in the area.
Once again we valued the Little Hotels website for identifying an excellent place to stay. |
We visited this Hotel from 4th to 7th May and enjoyed our stay. We had the Garden Room, which was well appointed and had a small semi-private courtyard. Ther food was good, dinner with homemade cakes was delicious and the hosts were friendly and helpful.
We do, however, have a comment. The en-suite in the Garden Room has an over bath shower and Mr Owen slipped badly out of the bath landing on an unforgiving tiled floor. This caused considerable briusing and pain neccessetating a visit to A&E and shortening our stay by 2 nights. The addition of a grab rail on the bath tiles might prevent a similar episode the the future. |
A lovely little hotel in a beautiful area. Very clean and traditionally furnished room with lots of outside space for playing and a roaring fire inside. The owners accommodated our family extremely well and provided us with delicious food. Definitely recommended.
Your service was efficient and easy. |
It was the last hotel that we stayed in at the end of our trip of 4 days and was by no means the least. In fact it came out top of the list. The things we really appreciated were the beauty and cleanliness of the place, the quiet air conditioning in our room, the lovely big, comfy bed, the excellent dinner, the fantastic and much needed pool and the attitude and friendliness of the owners. We would definitely recommend it!
Just two minor points - the sign post outside the hotel looks like it is pointing up the road so we were not sure if we had come to the right place or not. A bottle of water in the room would have been a nice touch. |
We had a brilliant time as Mas Fontanelles. What a lovely place to stay. The room was charming - very spacious, with a lovely comfortable bed, and a really nice bathroom. And the view from the window (we were at the front of the building) - fabulous. So quiet and peaceful, and the food was great too, at both breakfast and dinner. Sitting in the garden in the evening having pre-dinner drinks and nibbles must be the most relaxing thing in the world! We stayed for only two nights at the beginning of a touring holiday, but would love to go back. A lovely place to unwind - highly recommended. |

We Say
It's amazing that just a short distance inland from the Costa Blanca is this beautiful and peaceful countryside, apparently unknown to the millions who never move beyond the beach. One little spot in this paradise is the Vinalopó valley where you will find Mas Fontanelles. You can walk in the mountains in total solitude, surrounded by aromatic plants and herbs, historic castles and fresh springs and streams.
A Word from the Owner
Our hotel is not like a conventional hotel: it has been decorated to our personal taste by us, the owners, because we live here. We welcome our guests when they arrive, we carefully prepare their meals in our kitchen, we look after the garden, and we try to pass on to our guests as much detailed information as possible about the area. People who visit us love the tranquillity, the silence, the surroundings, the comfort of the hotel and the beds, the lounges, the wood-burning stove in winter, and especially the food.
