Finca La Ramallosa is unique: a small rural hotel which has risen up from the remains of a tiny abandoned hamlet deep in the countryside of Extremadura. The hotel is a cluster of one and two bedroom cottages, superbly restored in a truly rustic tradition, making it ideal for a holiday of family or friends.
La Ramallosa has land extending to almost 130 hectares where guests are free to roam among the olive groves, the meadows and the oak woods. It is not just the fabric of the hotel itself that can take you back to a past time; the wild flowers, the birds and animals lead you back to an era long before intensive agriculture and chemical fertiliser. Take a stroll, have a picnic, watch out for eagles, vultures, falcons, herons and nightingales. By night, pick a dark corner and marvel at the millions of stars in one of the most unpolluted night skies in Europe.
Each cottage has been restored in a simple rustic style using natural materials, with one or two bedrooms, a bathroom and a sitting room. Cool and inviting in summer, they all have fireplaces to make them a cosy retreat in winter too. All guests also have the use of the gardens, the salon and, in summer, the swimming pool.
Being so far from any cities, it's not easy to get to La Ramallosa, but it's well worth the effort. As well the hotel and lovely countryside nearby, this little corner of Cáceres offers so much more. There are Roman forts, Celtic ruins, mediaeval villages, natural parks and lakes, all tied together by the never-ending hills and mountains of Extremadura.
Meals
The restaurant is housed in the barn of the original farm. It offers tradicional recipes of the region, adapted to the personal style of Rebecca, co-owner and chef of La Ramallosa. The menu changes each day to give guests the widest choice and to make best use of the freshest produce available from the hotel's own gardens and fields, and the local market.
In true country fashion, breakfasts are a bit of a speciality: typical local migas, homemade jams and muffins, the farm's own olive oil, bread baked in the next village, local sausages.
As well as lunch and dinner at the hotel, Rebecca will prepare a picnic for guests going out for the day. She will also adapt her menu for children, vegetarians or just those who want to sample a little bit of everything.

Reviews
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
We recently spent four days at the above hotel. After a 9 hour journey and a 7km drive from the main road along a track we were more than pleased to see the fantastic sight that met our eyes. The countryside went for miles and miles with wild flowers, birds and wildlife all in their natural habitat. The tiny hamlet that once housed several farm workers had been tastefully restored.
Alfonso and his wife Rebecca are two of the nicest and most helpful people you could wish to meet. Rebecca is a fantastic cook, more than willing to accomodate our likes and dislikes. The lamb was the best we had ever tasted. However I am glad that Alfonso didn't tell me until after I had finished eating that it had come from his flock and a few days earlier I might have seen it in the field!
We enjoyed a ride on a A.T.V with Alfonso and his daughter Carlotta as our guides .We spent hours just walking and trying to identify the different types of birds of prey. We also met an amazing gentleman of 90 years old called Alberto who lives in the most unusual conditions and who still walks 24km once a week to get his supplies (mainly tuna and chocolate)!!
We have told all our friends about our experience and hope to return ourselves sometime, together with our dogs as they are also welcome.
Thank you Alfonso and Rebecca. |
Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Guestbook:
La Ramallosa is a unique hideaway nestling on the border of Spain and Portugal in Extramadura. If you are looking for something different this is for you and gives a feeling of real Spain! All of the buildings are sympathetically restored using local stone and the original designs to produce stunning buildings of the highest standard. |
Everything about this hotel deserves special praise - the little stone houses and the swimming pool, the salon where you can eat or pass the evening chatting around the fire, the meals with organic ingredients, the countryside and all the surroundings that just left me open-mouthed. All-in-all the perfect place to forget about the city and enjoy being in the middle of nature. |
To be right out here in the country, in our own little cottage is great. Its the ideal place. Finally I want to mention something that the owners don't make enough of: when I asked if I could have a meal withut meat, they prepared me a wonderful vegetarian dish at no extra charge. Only two little gripes: its a bit far from anywhere, and the lane is a bit rough, but it depends on your point of view, maybe they're advantages too. |

We Say
Finca La Ramallosa is not quite at the end of the earth, but on a clear day you can see it from there! Truly, it's not easy to get to, but a visit here really rewards your trouble. The cottages are beautiful; simple, rustic, idyllic. And the non-stop unspoilt countryside of the area seems like another world.
A Word from the Owner
We have a 130 hectare estate where you can lose yourself in the unique surroundings and traditions of our unspoiled countryside. Enjoy a meal in the local tradition, go further afield on horseback or quad, or simply relax in a century-old stone cottage that exudes rest and tranquillity.
