Located in the village of Tresgrandas, the Hotel Valleoscuru is set in a valley of quite extraordinary beauty. It's a position which is close to both the mountains and the sea, so visitors have a huge variety of sights to enjoy.
It's hard to believe that the hotel is of modern construction as it is packed with all the rustic features of traditional Asturian country architecture, mostly especially the generous use of stone and wood. Lying in gardens of several acres, there are lawns and terraces, a small wood of chestnut and oak, and the hotel's own market garden. And not far away is the hotel's own organic cider orchard.
Hotel Valleoscuru has 11 double rooms, one of which can take an extra bed (two at a push) and is ideal for a family. Each room has an en-suite bathroom, heating, a television, telephone and some have their own private terrace. There two cosy lounges, plus the restaurant of course with a terrace for outdoor dining in the summer. The traditional Asturian cuisine is quite a feature of Hotel Valleoscuru.
Tucked in between the mountains and the sea, the hotel is ideally placed for visiting both. Some of the most spectacular tourist destinations are within east reach, the hilles of Sierra del Cuera for example or the beach at Playa de la Franca.
Meals
The little dining room is fronted by a terrace with fantastic views of the nearby Sierra del Cuera. Breakfasts are taken here, as well as dinners which feature typical Asturian dishes prepared using the produce of the hotel's own kitchen garden. And the local organic cider is bound to creep into some of the recipes too!
Out and About
Where to begin!
Tresgrandas is surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Plana de la Borbolla and the Sierra del Cuera, with many meadows and forests, and a small trout river, the Cabra. All along it's banks are small flour mills, some of them still in operation. The river runs slowly through the Valleoscuru valley until it reaches the sea at Playa de la Franca (4 km away), one of the most beautiful beaches of the Asturian coast.
Playa de Gulpiyuri. A unique inland beach which the sea reaches via natural tunnels through the cliffs.
Cangas de Onís. A lovely little village famous for the perfectly preserved Roman bridge.
Lagos de Covadonga. The mountain lakes in the famous Picos de Europa.
Bufones de Pria. Another spectacle that is unique to this coastline. When the sea becomes rough the waves are driven into narrow passages in the cliffs and exit as spectacular jets of water in the clifftop above. Don't stand too close!
Lastres. A pretty fishing village where the houses tumble down the hillside to the little harbour in the bay.
All along the coast of Asturias there are high rugged cliffs interspersed with big beaches of fine, flat sand. So many, you'll never manage to visit them all.
Reviews
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
This is a gem. We stayed last summer and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Rosa made us so welcome despite us being delayed on the ferry and not arriving until after midnight.
We loved the location and the relaxed atmosphere of the hotel. We also enjoyed the meals at breakfast and dinner every night. We are planning to return next year. |
Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Guestbook:
For us, the annual visit to Valleoscuru is a family tradition. The quiet valley reminds us of the landscape of Switzerland. The hotel is so homely, without luxuries, but it makes up for that with the care and attention of the owners Rosalina and Alberto, Everything is special but most especially the traditional dinners and the llagar where we sit to enjoy a glass of cider. |
Alberto and Rosa are simply charming. Rosa's help in planning visits is extraordinary. Just tell her the things you are interested in and she will fix it all. |
We loved everything. It was all perfect. The hotel is fantastic and the surroundings are unbeatable. A thousand thank-yous to Rosalina and Alberto. |
This was the second time we have visited Asturias, and we were fortunate to stay in this charming hotel. |

We Say
Truly a "little hotel". The homely rooms and rustic charm reach heights that are matched only by the friendliness of Rosa and Alberto.
A Word from the Owner
We offer a typical and charming hotel in Asturias, in the mountains but just 5 minutes from some of the best beaches of the north of Spain. We make our own cider from our own organic apple trees. We serve traditional Asturian dishes, especially beef and other meat, and fresh fish from the Cantabrian Sea.
