Hotel Finca Santa Marta, Trujillo

Finca Santa Marta is a former olive mill and farm which has been converted into a small rural hotel bursting with country atmosphere and situated in the outstanding natural landscape of Extremadura. This is an area that is a paradise for bird-watchers, walkers and artists.

The hotel lies in grounds of gardens, olive groves and orchards, surrounded by meadows and rolling hills. It consists of two original farms linked together by a pleasant patio. All 14 double bedrooms of the Finca have a bathroom with shower, central heating and views of the surrounding farmland. The style is reminiscent of the rustic atmosphere of ancient well-tended farms, but the interiors reflect a delicate balance of comfort and originality. Breakfast and dinner are served in the ancient olive oil mill complete with its 19th century hand-driven olive press. Meanwhile, one of the lounges leads to the bodega with its large well-preserved clay wine casks. Centuries-old hooks can still be seen driven into the vaulted ceilings, from which hams were hung to cure.

Outside there is a large swimming pool in an extensive garden set in the hilly landscape, with views of the nearby cherry and almond orchards, and the olive groves on the hills beyond. The patio has orange trees and a profusion of jasmine and roses, and it leads to the old chapel where services are still occasionally held. Above the chapel, the bell tower is home to a magnificent stork's nest from where the characteristic clacking of beaks can be heard as the birds feed their young.

Painters and artists are drawn to the Finca Santa Marta by the wonderful quality of the light, the fabulous country views and the beauty of the nearby town of Trujillo with its granite houses, mellow pantile roofs and the never-ending circling of birds. This area is home to lesser kestrels, swifts and white storks.

The Plaza Mayor of Trujillo is known as "one of the most charming and appealing in the country." As well as being a traditional town of convents and splendid mansions, "the winding stone streets around the plaza impart an unusual degree of charm and tranquillity, inviting you to linger and wander around town."

Although Extremadura seems a remote area, it is not difficult to get to. There are direct motorway links to Madrid and Seville for those who are in a hurry.

We had an excellent time at the Finca Marta Hotel.
A wonderful location with lovely pool, tea and coffee making facilities, beautiful grounds and lovely breakfasts. Spoilt by poor accommodation which was very small. I am used to rustic but termites burrowing into the pillars and beams of the entrance and spending 2 hours killing swams of flying ants in our bedroom is not my idea of a holiday. No one on site to ask for help that night!! My pillow was the worse one I have ever had in any hotel. But despite that we did enjoy the rest.
This is the third 'little hotel of Spain' that we have stayed in, it was equally as individual as the others, very comfortable & relaxing. We stayed at the hotel for diner, no menu or wine list, the dishes & wine were just brought out (but this all added to the charm!).
We really did not know what to expect but found the Finca Santa Marta a delight. A bit basic I suppose and we bought a mosquito spray to get rid of a few mossies but we thoroughly enjoyed the two night there.

We had our two evening meals there and they were most enjoyable. There was no menu, but the food offered was so very enjoyable as was the wine. By the way, the liquers and coffee are also included. Breakfast had a good selection for our appetites.

The rooms we booked were the larger ones and they were most ample. There are plenty of places to crash out and relax including the swimming pool.

We would go again.

We may not have as many reviews as some, but we do know their provenance. They have all been written by people who have visited this hotel after booking through Little Hotels. We publish all reviews, unedited, except for the occasional spelling correction.

Here's What Some People Have Written On Other Review Sites or in the Guestbook:

Great place, wonderful food, great birding. Will certainly come again. N.K.

Our gratitude goes to the very gracious staff of the Finca who have made our stay in Extremadura so relaxing and enjoyable - one we shan't forget. J.B. USA

Finca Santa Marta has a lovely historical ambience with artefacts and furniture tastefully arranged. We felt very happy here. We had some spectacular bird sightings including 51 great bustards flying near us as we ate our packed lunch on Serena Plain and a chance sighting of an immature Spanish Imperial Eagle sitting on a dead tree preening itself. We were well looked after and look forward to a return visit. C.G.

Suzi and I have so much enjoyed meeting you Henri, and everybody else working and staying here. We have really loved your beautiful Finca Santa Marta. We will be back. A.F.

A wonderland of so many good things. J.P.

Some places have a special ambience. This is one of them. We had a restful stay here. R. & J.P.

A perfect week in a wonderful tranquil location. Excellent weather and great birding. The 'finca' has a special rustic charm and I look forward to returning some time in the future. J.C.
