Casona de San Pantaleon is a small hotel tucked away in a surprising location, surrounded by water and accessed by a small mediaeval bridge. The isolation adds to the sense of oneness with the environment; the mountains, the rivers and the valleys, yet in reality the hotel is easily accessible from the airports and ferries at Santander and Bilbao.
The restoration and conversion has kept the Casona looking just like a casona (country house) should: big, square, rustic, and looking like it could withstand an artillery siege. The hotel sits in over an acre of land, planted with fruit trees and native species, washed on one side by a mill stream and on the other by the river Clarin.
The hotel has seven rooms, including three suites. They are spacious and individually designed to take full advantage of the 400 years of history that has gone into their making. They all have telephone, television, central heating and most have the option of twin beds or a double.
The heart of the house is the three storey hall and stairs with it's stone entrance arch and huge wooden door. The mixture of stone, brick, wood, plaster, ironwork and tiles bears witness to the long and varied history of the house. The dining room leads off from here, a cosy little space dominated by the stone entrance arch of the mediaeval tower at the centre of the house. There is also a lounge with a large old fireplace, another cosy place for reading, relaxing or chatting with friends. The spa is located in the loft, where there is a sauna, steam bath, hydromassage shower, mini hydromassage pool and a relaxation zone offering exclusive use for two people.
Casona de San Pantaleon is in a handy position, not too far for a visit to Bilbao, and with ready access to all the beaches and marine scenery of the Cantabrian coast as well as the mountains of Cantabria. It's a little populated area of great ecological importance for its varied flora, fauna and geology.

Breakfasts and other meals are available in the garden, under the veranda or in your own room. Being in an area so renowned for its produce, it's natural that the cooking takes full advantage of the best products from the region: yoghurts and cheeses, outdoor-reared beef, anchovies, tuna, and don't forget the home-made cakes and biscuits.

Reviews
Reviews from Little Hotels Travellers:
The perfect place to stay in Cantabria. The lovely Rosa and her family welcome you into a beautiful hotel that has a family home feel. Their service is outstanding and the location is perfect for getting to know one of the most gorgeous parts of Spain. From fantastic breakfasts to a superb laundry service to a cup of mint tea by an open fire everything was just right. This hotel is different from the usual chain type places to stay and well worth the visit. |
The hotel was just as described on the web-site. Rosa and her husband and her team were all very helpful and could not do enough for us.
One criticism would be nice to have a few places to visit in English as the maps we were given were all in Spanish.
We will be using Little Hotels again. Five star. |
A fantastic little hotel. We had three rooms, all of which were charming. The service was very good and the owners charming. We had an excellent dinner in the restaurant. We would fully recommend this hotel to others. |
Our stay from 18 to 24 June was superb. The welcome was warm and friendly, the hotel very comfortable, relaxed and peaceful, and the food, especially the vegetarian food, delicious. The walks around Santona and the hills not far from Badames are lovely. Information is available at the hotel. The scenery in the Parque Natural Collados del Ason is spectacular. When we were there the roadsides were full of wild flowers, particularly Bee and Tongue Orchids.
I can highly recommend this hotel. If ever we return to the area we shall stay there. |
This is a really lovely country house run by a very pleasant young lady - excellent food and a pleasure to stay there. |
An ideal location for visitors using ferries at Santander and Bilbao. Excellent accommodation and warm welcome from Rosa and family. Highly recommended and good value. |

We Say
The Cantabria coast is one of the lesser-known gems of Spain, and the Casona de Pantaleon in turn is a jewel in the crown of Cantabria. The work that has gone into the restoration is just fantastic. It has been so well planned that it doesn't look planned at all.
A Word from the Owner
We would like to invite all our guests to share a moment with nature in the garden, or come inside and have a chat by the warmth of the fireplace.
